Lisa M. Bennett

Biography
Dr. Lisa M. Bennett is a story teller.  She loves using verbal and written communication to empower others to live their best lives. She is an optometric physician practicing since 1994, providing clarity through both optometry and writing. She writes mostly about the visual system and its connection to systemic health, behavior and  learning.
Intriqued by the intersection of eyecare and public health Dr. Bennett was discussing career options with a Director of Helen Keller International (HKI) when she learned about HKI's  Child Sight program . It was the agency's only domestic program and the goal was to alleviate the number one vision problem for children - refractive error. One in four children have a vision problem that can interfer with learning. She helped launch the pilot program and then continued working with Child Sight in addition to seeing patients in her office.. In total she spent 14 years as part of a team going to public schools in NY,  NJ and Va giving eye exams and writing eyeglass prescriptions for children. She is concerned that parental knowledge about the importance of vision and the availabilty eye exams for children still remains a challenge.  It was with this in mind that she wrote My Eyes and Me Growing to Three.  Vision is the dominant sense providing 80% of the input for learning.  In this book she tells how the visual system develops right away  and then helps Mikey during his critical first 1,000 days. His eyes help him to grow to be an active and charming 3 year old. It is beautifully illustrated by Damien Dugger. Parents and children alike will love this fun and educational story.
